Amerigo Vespucci ___"Our country's named after the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci instead of the Italian navigator Christopher Columbus. But why? Who was Amerigo Vespucci, and what did he do?" The author provides an answer. See if you agree with him. - Illustrated - From John H. Lienhard - http://www.uh.edu/engines/epi43.htm

Amerigo Vespucci __ An article about the life and accomplishments of Amerigo Vespucci - From studyworld.com - http://www.studyworld.com/Amerigo_Vespucci.htm

Amerigo Vespucci __ An excellent summary of Vespucci and his life. - From About.com - http://geography.about.com/cs/historicalgeog/a/amerigo.htm

Amerigo Vespucci __ "...was a Italian merchant and cartographer who voyaged to and wrote about the Americas. His exploratory journeys along the eastern coastline of South America convinced him that a new continent had been discovered, a bold contention in his day when everyone, including Christopher Columbus, thought the seafaring trailblazers setting out from European docks were travelling to East Asia."  You will find an encyclopedic article with links to related materials. - From wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amerigo_Vespucci

Amerigo Vespucci __ A brief biographical sketch. - illustrated - From Thinkquest.org - http://library.thinkquest.org/4034/vespucci.html

Amerigo Vespucci __ "Amerigo sailed from Spain in 1499 in an expedition that visited the neighborhood of Cape Paria and several hundred miles of coast, and returned in June, 1500. In May, 1501, he entered the service of Emanuel, of Portugal, and participated in an expedition that visited the coast of Brazil."  You will also find some controversy about dates. - illustrated - From virtualology.com - http://www.virtualology.com/virtualmuseumofhistory/hallofexplorers/AMERIGOVESPUCCI.ORG/

Amerigo Vespucci (1452-1512): Account Of His First Voyage, 1497 __ "Amerigo Vespucci (born in Florence in 1452), whose name was given to the American continents by Waldsmuller in 1507, worked in Seville (where he died) in the business house which fitted out Columbus' second expedition. Here he gives an account of the first of his own four voyages. If his claims are accurate he reached the mainland of the Americas shortly before Cabot, and at least 14 months before Columbus." - From Paul Halsall - http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/1497vespucci-america.html

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Amerigo Vespucci __ An overview of Vespucci's life and voyages. - From Newadvent.org - http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15384b.htm

Why was America named after Amerigo Vespucci? __ "although I guess to ask the question is to answer it. Amerigo's first name was a lot more euphonious than his last name, and (no small matter) could be latinized into a word that started and ended with the letter A, just like Asia and Africa before it."  Well, that is part of the answer anyway.  You will also find some controversy here. - From straightdope.com - http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a4_021.html
