AMANAKA'A AMAZON NETWORK: Yanomami Background __ "The Yanomami live in the Northern Amazon along the Brazil-Venezuela border. Numbering 19,000 roughly equally divided between the two countries, they are the largest indigenous nation in the Americas that still retains their traditional way of life. They are one of the most recently contacted peoples, having very little contact with outside society before the 1980's. Since 1987, the Yanomami have seen about 10% of their entire population - over 2,000 people - decimated by massacres and diseases brought by invaders." A brief but good overview. - http://www.amanakaa.org/yanomami/about.htm

An Amazon Adventure--The Amazon's Yanomami Indians __ A good overview. "There are several ways to refer to the Yanomami Indians of the Amazon Rainforest. Many people refer to them as the Yanomami while others refer to them as Yanomama or Yanomano. Either way, someone chooses to say their name, the word still means wild, uncivilized people of the Amazon. The Yanomami are a group of South American Indians tribes that include many different groups. They live in 200- 250 villages in the Amazon frontier region in a forested area scattered along the Venezuela-Brazil borderlands, most in the northern part of Brazil." - From Brandon High School - http://jajhs.kana.k12.wv.us/amazon/yano1.htm
